Removing the gearbox is the single biggest design decision in a modern wind or hydro drive train. A permanent magnet generator built for direct drive turns at the same speed as the turbine, so the rotor connects straight to the shaft and every gear stage disappears. A direct drive gearless permanent magnet generator therefore trades a little extra upfront engineering for years of lower maintenance, higher availability and quieter operation. ENNENG builds gearless permanent magnet generators from 5kW to 500kW for wind, hydro and industrial power generation.

To judge a gearless design we must first understand what the gearbox does, and why replacing it changes the whole machine.
A gearbox spins a slow turbine up to the generator rated speed, but it does so with hundreds of moving parts, oil seals and bearings that wear, leak and eventually fail. In field service, gearbox faults are the single largest source of downtime and maintenance cost on geared turbines. A direct drive permanent magnet generator removes that whole assembly: a high pole count rotor generates usable voltage at 60rpm to 600rpm without any speed increase.
Low speed operation is what makes gearless generation possible. With many poles, the machine produces rated frequency at turbine speed, so torque is generated directly on the shaft. The result is a shorter drive train, far fewer alignment problems and much less vibration transmitted into the tower or foundation.
Every component removed is a failure point removed. A gearless permanent magnet generator cuts the rotating parts between turbine and generator to almost none, raising availability and extending service intervals.

Because there is no gear mesh to lubricate or replace, operating cost falls year after year. Removing gear losses also lifts overall drive train efficiency, so more of the captured energy reaches the grid.

ENNENG gearless permanent magnet generators run from 60rpm to 600rpm and deliver stable three phase output from 220V to 690V. With an optional built-in AVR or a matched converter, a direct drive generator can feed grid tie or off grid systems directly, holding voltage within plus or minus 1% under varying load.
A 120rpm gearless permanent magnet generator powers an onshore wind turbine with no gearbox, cutting the drive train to the rotor and generator alone and reducing tower head mass.
A 200rpm axial flux unit mounts straight on a water turbine shaft, generating reliable power in a remote micro hydro site with maintenance visits only once a year.
Every site has its own speed, voltage, shaft and mounting constraints. ENNENG provides free electromagnetic design proposals, voltages from 220V to 690V, bespoke shafts, IP54 to IP68 protection and full OEM service. Every generator is full load tested before delivery.

A: The generator itself costs more because of its high pole count and larger diameter, but removing the gearbox, its oil and its maintenance usually lowers total cost of ownership over the 20 year design life.
A: ENNENG builds gearless permanent magnet generators from 60rpm to 600rpm, with pole count matched to the turbine so no speed increase is needed.
A: Yes. A wide speed, variable voltage output paired with a rectifier and inverter, or an optional AVR, lets the generator feed off grid battery or hybrid systems directly.
